Finding Your Giant Voice
By Dr. Carol Fleming

Jerry was recently hired by a large company to be a sales representative. His performance review included comments about ‘youthfulness’ that he interpreted as meaning ‘immature’. When I called his boss to get clarification, his boss specifically mentioned a ‘boyish, high voice’.

But Jerry’s voice itself was not high. It was placed/focused in the front of his face and just sounded high because of the overtones. He needed to develop the richer resonances of his throat to balance the brighter sounds from the front of his face. Here are some of the things we did that might help you.

Yawn and feel how the back of your throat pops open in a genuine yawn; you want this more open throat.

Keep your tongue flat in your mouth so the tip touches the back of your lower teeth (your impulse will be to pull your tongue back in your throat. Resist!) You want to feel your throat as open and relaxed as possible.

Produce a singing tone that starts high and glides lower, imagining in going down into your chest. It should sound and feel differently from your normal voice. You might place your hand in the middle of your upper chest and try to feel the vibrations from these lower resonances.

Maintaining the lower pitch, go ‘hohoho’ like the Jolly Green Giant, letting the tone come from deep in the chest. Repeat. Pay attention to the feeling in the throat and as you make this big relaxed sound with no strain.

The Jolly Green Giant was an useful concept for Jerry to locate the resonances in the back of his throat – a place he had never visited before! Of course, you now must do the practice to make it a familiar place for you to use in your speaking.
